How do I vote in general elections and by-elections?

It’s so simple. Just head down to a polling place in your area between 9am and 7pm on election day.

Why not head down with family or pop in with mates and do it together? (Just keep your 'campaigning' to them to before election day!)

Polling booths are usually set up in your local school, community centre or library. Just check out your EasyVote pack that will arrive in the post about a week beore election day for the nearest place, or the polling places for your electorate will be listed on Elections NZ.

Inside the polling place you'll be pointed to a table where an election worker will take your EasyVote card or ask you your name and address if you don't have an EasyVote card with you.  They'll rule a line through your name on the roll and give you your ballot paper.

You take your ballot paper behind a screen, use the pen provided to vote, fold the paper in half, and pop it in the box for your electorate.  And then you’re done - it should only take a few minutes!

Voting’s totally private, so nobody knows who you choose.

If you have any questions, the election team is there to help.  Elections NZ shows the whole deal in a poster for you.

Your EasyVote pack or Elections NZ tells how you can vote ahead of the big day if you're going to be out of your electorate or unable to vote on the day.
